Doctors in England and Wales have a statutory duty to notify a 'proper officer' of the local authority of suspected cases of certain infectious diseases. This is normally your local Public Health consultant / office. This information is collated by the Communicable Disease Surveillance Centre (CDSC). The main purpose of the notifications system is speed in detecting possible outbreaks and epidemics. Accuracy of diagnosis is important but is secondary, and since 1968 clinical suspicion of a notifiable infection is all that is required. If a diagnosis later proves incorrect it can always be changed or cancelled. Interestingly, HIV is NOT a notifiable disease.

Further information and a full list of notifiable diseases is available at http://www.hpa.org.uk/infections/topics_az/noids/menu.htm
